Waihi Beach Library

The design for the new Waihi Beach Library seeks to create a welcoming, light-filled community hub that reflects the relaxed coastal character of Waihi Beach. The building’s form and materials take inspiration from the surrounding dunes, timber textures, and beachside vernacular, incorporating natural finishes and shaded verandas that blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The layout prioritises flexibility and transparency—providing adaptable spaces for reading, community gatherings, exhibitions, and workshops—while maintaining clear visual connections to the town centre and adjacent open spaces. Generous glazing and natural ventilation enhance comfort and sustainability, with durable, low-maintenance materials suited to the coastal environment. The design aims to foster connection, learning, and wellbeing, positioning the library as a vital civic heart for both residents and visitors.
