Positioned within the dunes at 15 Surf Road, the proposed Ōmanu Surf Life Saving Club is conceived as a resilient, community-focused coastal pavilion that responds to its highly exposed beachfront setting. The low-slung, horizontally expressed form preserves the open character of the coastline while providing a prominent landmark and purpose-built emergency-response facility. Oriented toward Ōmanu Beach, the building accommodates lifeguard operations, equipment storage, patrol, training, meeting, community, viewing and support spaces, with large openings and elevated operational areas providing panoramic coastal views and effective surveillance of the surf zone. Layered roof planes, deep overhangs, wrap-around decks and extensive glazing create sheltered transitions between indoor and outdoor areas while admitting natural light, sea breezes and views across the beach, dunes and Pacific Ocean. Precast concrete and profiled metal cladding establish a robust, low-maintenance material palette suited to salt-laden winds, high solar exposure and coastal weathering, while the restrained architecture reflects the practical and informal character of traditional beachfront facilities. The design strengthens connections to the adjoining public reserve and coastal access network while responding sensitively to the surrounding low-rise residential environment, important view shafts, coastal hazards and the wider landscape character of Ōmanu and Mount Maunganui.
